Preserving Our Past: The Heidelberg Heritage Association

About the Association:

The Heidelberg Heritage Association is dedicated to preserving, documenting, and promoting the rich history of Heidelberg and its surrounding areas. Operating as a central forum, the association connects individuals and participating organisations passionate about local history. As a proud member of the Heritage Association of South Africa, the group focuses on safeguarding South African heritage for future generations.

Core Activities and Initiatives:

  • Site Documentation: Identifying, recording, and protecting historical buildings and sites, specifically targeting structures over 80 years old.

  • The Blue Plaque Programme: Awarding official "Blue Plaques" to recognise and commemorate significant historical landmarks. A recent milestone includes the installation of Plaque Number 84 at the Heidelberg Crown Hotel.

  • Heritage Awareness: Raising public appreciation for local history through educational publications, community initiatives, and guided tours.

  • Community Collaboration: Serving as a networking platform to facilitate joint heritage projects and partnerships.

  • Historical Publishing: Researching and publishing books derived from local historical archives, including the Heidelberg SAR News newspaper.
